Pleckgate staff take part in One Voice Blackburn’s ‘I’m not a Muslim but I will fast for one day’ initiative

A number of Pleckgate staff are taking part in One Voice Blackburn’s ‘I’m not a Muslim but I will fast for one day’ initiative.

The Blackburn charity has been running this award-winning project for 10 years.

It’s a community-cohesion initiative asking individuals or groups to fast for one day during Ramadan, which started yesterday and will finish around April 10th.

Head of World Religion and World Views Mrs Savage said: ‘I take part in this initiative every year with One Voice because I think it is so important to do especially when I am working in a school with so many Muslim pupils.

“I expect them to turn up and work hard but I need to be mindful of how difficult this can be whilst fasting and the only way to truly understand this is to fast myself.

“I massively admire our pupils and my Muslim friends for fasting for the full month and think this is a fantastic initiative for community cohesion in Blackburn with Darwen.’

Mr Carter, World Religion and World Views Teacher said: “I have decided to immerse myself in the school community and to empathise with the students in my class.”

Mrs Belshaw, Learning Support said: “We work in a Muslim community and I think it is important to show an awareness of Islam. The only way to truly understand how difficult fasting is, is to do it ourselves.”

Mr Bajkowski, Head of History added: “I am always amazed at how our students fast for a full month and I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could do it too.”
