Chris Hines MBE visits Pleckgate!

Environmentalist Chris Hines MBE has inspired Pleckgate High School’s Eco-Club to be a force for change.
Chris took time out of his busy schedule to spend a day with the Eco-Club looking at the school and helping them suggest changes which will make the school ‘greener.’
Chris, who has spent 30 years championing environmental causes, said: “I actually have a connection to the school as my mother-in-law Judith Mallam used to teach Maths here.
“Mr McKenzie who teaches here remains in contact with Judith, and therefore me, and he suggested coming into the school and talking about environmental issues.
“It’s been a pleasure to be here and talk to pupils about the challenges but also about finding solutions, which is important. It’s important to create a future where plants, animals and people live in harmony.”
“These pupils can make a positive difference to the planet.”
Chris spoke at a Year 7 assembly about sustainability, looking at ways Pleckgate can be more energy efficient and ways to reduce the school’s carbon footprint.
The Eco-Club pupils then interviewed the school’s Business Manager Mr Clark and Site Supervisor Mr Holden about the sustainability of the school. They questioned them about solar panels, waste water, recycling, LED light bulbs and generally about saving energy and reducing waste in school.
There was also talk about more walking and cycling to school to help the environment.
Pupil Nimra said: “I joined the Eco-Club because I want to help the planet and implement change to do this.”
Muhammed said: “I like learning about nature and the environment so this visit has been really good.”
Pupils learnt about how waste is managed at Pleckgate, they assessed how the outdoor space is used at school and there was also survey on travelling to school as they look to implement changes to make the school more environmentally-friendly.
